Venetian Cat Bauer - The Venice Blog: Venetian Masks
Hi, Loved your article. I am planning on being in Venice for a week mid-April 2011. Received the name of Sergio shop from a friend who purchased one of his beautiful mask 2 years ago. I can hardly wait to see more of them. I am glad to hear they ship, since I will probably not be able to make up my mind. I will be there the week before Easter, will the shop be open? Does he still do the secret question? ML

Snail Depression.
I have been quite worried about Snailie since this I started a blog about him and other unrelated topics. He has been hiding out under the lettuce, a lot! I did not know if Snailie was not happy about me mentioning Lilly in his blog or it if he was not happy when I said this blog would contain other items of interest also. Or was it just because I was not letting him have free range of the kitchen anymore.
So I have been keeping a close eye on him and also did a little reading about having a snail for a pet. Gotta make sure I take good care of him, since he can not go out and forge for himself. Of course that is a dangerous life, what with eyeeeeeeeee...... Snail Bait !!!!!!!!!!! In reading everything I could find on rearing a snail. I did make a few discoveries. I have not told him the book I am reading about rearing snails, is really a book for people who raise snail, for escargo. I think I will keep that tidbit from him.
First off, I was standing next to his little home and heard this tiny crunnnnnnnnnnch, crunnnnnnnnch, crunnnnnch, much to my dismay he actually had his little head turned way around and was eating his own shell. Well, I just knew there had to be a reason for it, so back to the book on rearing snails. "Probably needs dirt or maybe his calcium levels are low" I dig out my calcium pills out and scrape a bit off one onto his lettuce and sure enough he made tracks over to the calcium dust on the lettuce and started eating there.
In my reading I discovered when raising snail, they like dirt and get nutrients from it also. Well, I have been bringing in his lettuce from the garden and cutting off the dirty roots and washing it to boot. I have stopped that, since he should have it all. Since I have put in dirty roots with the greens he has been like a pig in s..., or in this case a snail in dirt!
Something else that has amazed me is his strength. I guess I did not arrange his home exactly the he really wanted it, so he has spent a little time moving things around. He actually moved several dirty 4" roots from one side of his home to the middle of the it.
But back to this depression thing from the first post until now he has been hidding a lot, even after I sorted out the the nutrional problems, I was really preplexed. Then it hit me, he must be a Republican.. Thinking back on the date this started, was about the time for the count down to the election, then there was the election. Because the day after the election, he just stuck his head in the sand literally. Finally today he was moving around a bit and , started eating more. Also, maybe that eating his own shell, was sorta like nail biting when you are nervous.
Hopefully, he has come to terms with the how the election turned out. If he had really thought about it, his house is paid for, so no foreclosure, he really has no investment, so no increases in capitol gains tax to worry about, he can't handle a gun so no concerns over gun control, he doesn't make over $200,000 (last figure I heard) so no taxes, and since he basically has zip for income, he will get his health insurance on an entitlement program. So he has decided not to really sweat this election and it outcome. He has decided that if things get really tough, he will have to eat more dirt and maybe switch to a few weed, instead of all lettuce.
That's it for now.

Snail Update
Do you know that a snail can travel about 1" in 5 seconds? Now you may wonder why I would even be posting such a question. Well, it all starts earlier this summer. I brought in a bunch of greens from the garden and in cleaning them I found a bunch of slugs and this teeny weeny snail. I plucked him off the the greens and was about to let him join the slugs (I won't describe where they went), when he stuck his itsy bitsy head up in the air and looked all around, from the tip of my finger. His little feelers just a' twitching. I decided to take a picture of him, well by the time I finished photographing him, we were friends. Plus he was such a good subject, since he stayed still long enough to get a photo. Unlike other pets that we will talk about another time. So I set Snailie on the window sill with some of those greens and while he was tiny he stayed pretty close to home. Now about 4 months later he has grown quite a bit and can travel quite fast, contrary to popular belief....His shell started out about 1/4" and is now 1 1/4". His length is hard to determine, but I would say he was about 1/2" to start and now at least 2.
After his first 4 day disappearing act I made him a little aquarium . Now when I clean it out he makes a hasty attempt to get away from me. . It just amazes me how fast he manages that. Sometimes I find him nestled in among the tomatoes ripening on the counter. He does like them.
So much for Snailie today. I want to just say this blogging is new to me, I have never even read a blog before, tho I do use the computer a great deal, more for research. For some unknown reason of late I have had this need to share tidbits and my take on things I see and hear everyday. I live with my husband and a darling little dog named Lilly. We are animal and now snail lovers, at least I am. We feed, much to many of our friends dismay the raccoons, and did feed the deer until our neighbors hounded us into stopping that. In our defense however, they are just so interesting to watch, and can bring so much joy in just watching their antics... Not to mention it makes for great photography.
As you can tell, I do enjoy being an amateur photographer, as well as silversmithing, something I took up after retiring. I do enjoy dabbling in other art forms. My husband and I built our last 2 homes and enjoy living in the Northwest. We have an extensive garden, more his passion. I enjoy cooking and all the fresh produce his garden provides.
Well I am going to see now if I can get this posted. I did manage to build a profile after much ado. Watch for more Snailie updates among other things.
